Nilo was a magnificent dog who loved hiking, sleeping in snow, and bone chewing. He was strong in stature and gentle in spirit. We miss him terribly especially his daily vocalizations that usually involved food. He was quite the talker! Nilo was diagnosed with osteosarcoma after limping for a couple of weeks and not responding to anti-inflamatory medication. An x-ray was performed and we learned of his cancer. We were in shock. We were told by his vet that he was a poor candidate for amputation due to his size and age. We were left with a decision to make. Either euthanize him before the cancer rendered him unable to walk, or to try and manage his pain with strong narcotics, which may have made walking more difficult. He was unable to use his rear leg, walking unsteadily on three legs and was noticably in pain. We made the compassionate decision to euthanize him on July 12, 2008. We are devasted by his passing but are seeking ways to celebrate his wonderous life each day.
